Does Your Dog Truly Impact Your Life? Be The Best Owner!

A dog can provide you with loyalty, love, and affection. Dogs are excellent pets for individuals or whole families. If you are interested in being a better pet owner, the advice in this article can help.

Take the time to make sure your house is dog-proofed. Before you bring a new dog home, make sure the whole area is safe. Put all medication and cleaning supplies away, and keep your indoor trash can inside a cabinet. Some indoor plants are poisonous, so put them high up.

Consider teaching your dog hand signals along with verbal commands. Consistency and practice are key to teaching a dog these non-verbal commands. Many owners get frustrated and resort back to verbal commands, but a well-trained dog should understand both. Try using only verbal commands when the dog is out of sight range, but when close up, only use the hand signals.

Groom your dog regularly. A dog requires constant grooming to keep his coat in tip top condition. Make sure that your dog is completely relaxed before you start the grooming session; this is especially important if he is excitable. Keep the session quite short (5 to 10 minutes at most) until he is comfortable with the idea of being groomed. Most importantly – be sure to praise him and offer a treat after a successful grooming session!

Your dog speaks to you, but it is through non-verbal cues. Your job is to learn to listen carefully so you understand the message. If your dog is fearful or shy, do not insist that they interact. This might lead to a bite to another dog or even to a person. Keep eye on non-verbal clues and look toward your dog for your next move.

When it’s time for dog training, you’ll want to do it inside your house or in your yard. Avoid training your dog in heavily occupied areas. It is very difficult to teach a dog that is distracted by people and disturbances.

Brushing your pup daily can do much more than reduce shedding in your home. Regular brushing encourages a healthy, shining coat. Brushing helps to spread the oil on the skin which results in soft, shiny, and healthy skin.

If your vet gives you medication to take home and administer to your dog, be sure and ask for ideas on getting him to swallow it. Dogs differ in their tolerance of pills and badly-flavored liquids, so have a few tricks up your sleeve in case he resists. Getting a dog to take medicine is important, but often challenging.

If you’re going to adopt a new dog from an animal shelter, you need to get a vet appointment scheduled as soon as possible. Shelter dogs could be sick or exposed to different viruses. It’s smart to ensure your dog has all shots necessary before you take him home.

There are many things to consider when planning excellent canine care. This is not something that you should take lightly. Give the proper affection to your dog, and show him a lot of compassion. When you follow through properly, you can enjoy life together for years to come.
